Historical note: In the DAC minutes of September 11, 1990, this Study Group
seemed to have its birth. It seemed to be a logical response to the findings of the
David Dixon Report. Don Olson on Sep. 18, 1990 provided a discussion agenda
for "improvements". This gave rise to the formulation of the questionnaire and its
findings. This information, plus the "Guidelines", plus discussions among the
group and beyond, produced the report of Dec. 1991. Then began the many,
many, many layouts.
I will use Steve's well thought out framework:
1. BUILD A "LOADING ISLAND" WHERE etc.etc.
Disadvantage:
d. Surface changes of loading/off-loading and crossing bus driveway
could be hazardous.
4. MOVE LEXPRESS TO THE NORTH SIDE OF THE EDISON WAY PARKING
LOT.
Advantages:
a. Riders would embark from a safe platform, not in street. (ADA
requirement ?)
b. There would be one crosswalk to get to most of the shops.
(Theynow must do this.)
c. A shelter could be built.
d. Emery Park boundaries do not change.
e. If this land exchange (necessary for this proposal is made), trees
could be planted to enhance the visual landscape of that
presently unappealing corner.
f. Lexpress routes #1 and #3 would be better. Possibly #5 could be
reversed and be better.
Disadvantages:
a. Lexpress not so visible.
b. It removes the healthy bustle of activity from the park.
c. Lexpress busses would have to go in Edison Way and through
that parking lot.
d. It extends routes #4 and #6 by going east on Massachusetts Avenue
and through the traffic light.
Miscellaneous comments;
1.Lexpress route #2 at this time must go through the traffic light at
Waltham Street.
2. A suggestion has been put forth to discover if permission could be
given to Lexpress to turn left down alley by Bay Bank. This
would reduce some of the time increase.
