This year marked the reestablishment of the Design Advisory
Committee and the broader Design Advisory Group, the purpose of
which is to assist the Selectmen in applying professional design
standards and criteria to Town structures, sites and facilities,
and to projects supported by Town funds.
The first meeting of the new seven-member Design Advisory
Committee met May 20 , 1987, with Selectmen Chairman, John C. Eddison.
Successive meetings occurred about once a month and now are scheduled
on the second Tuesday of every month in Room 111 of the Town Offices.
In October, the Board of Selectmen agreed to expand the Committee to
nine members .
The Committee has established liaison with the Lexington Center
Committee and the Historic District Commission to work on Lexington
Center Design issues. Their goal is to develop guidelines which will
provide context and continuity to the character of the Center and to
preserve and strengthen its pleasant qualities without stifling
creative design and marketing innovations which may arise in the
future. The Committee may propose that the Town retain a Consultant
to assist in preparing these guidelines. It is important first to
analyze the overall framework of the Center and then plan how various
elements fit into it. Some elements that will be considered are
circulation, vistas, special places, open spaces, building facades ,
signs , parking, paving materials, landscaping, street furniture, light-
ing, and a Lexington Center logo.
Other issues the Committee is presently reviewing are: design
plans for the Lexington Community (Bob Leather' s) Playground and the
Minuteman Commuter Bikeway; future plantings of trees on the Battle
Green, the Cary Hall lawn, and at other highly visible locations ;
and recommendations on the location and design of a "USS Lexington"
monument currently proposed by the Lions Club on Town land near
Buckman Tavern.
The Committee appointed a Subcommittee to direct preparation of
a detailed base map of Lexington Center which will greatly facilitate
planning and the Committee ' s design advisory capacity.
