Eddison, Chairman DATE: October 22, 1986 Board of Selectmen FROM: Peter M. Chalpin, C a' an SUBJECT: Tewksbury Street Crossing Traffic Committee At its meeting of October 15, 1986, the Traffic Safety Committee met with Ms. Catherine Lee to discuss her request for a crosswalk on Bedford Street at Tewksbury Street. The Committee's initial reaction was positive However as the discussion progressed, a concern came to light regarding the advisability of our encouraging persons, in particular senior citizens, to cross at this location,by installing a crosswalk. The volume of traffic on Bedford Street is heavy, as described by Ms Lee, and the Committee agreed with Ms. Lee's assessment of the difficulty in cross- ing Bedford Street. However, we recommend not installing a crosswalk at this time. We believe that the new signals at Hill Street will have a pedestrian phase and recommend that, despite the additional walking distance, these signals be used to cross Bedford Street. We feel that it would be unwise to install a crosswalk on Bedford Street unless it is accompanied by signals. Those in Attendance: Peter M. Chalpin Dr. Clarke Mr. Mix Mr. Maloney Sgt.
