TRAFFIC SAFETY ADVISORY COMMITTEE U
MEMORANDUM
TO: John C. Eddison, Chairman DATE: October 21, 1986
Board of Selectmen
FROM: Peter M. Chalpin, p-n SUBJECT: Traffic-Massachusetts Ave
Traffic Committee AW East Lexington
Page #1 of 2
At its meeting of October 15, 1986, the Traffic Committee again discussed traffic on
Massachusetts Avenue, between Tower Park and the Arlington Town Line, with area
representatives. Our first meeting on this subject was May 7, 1986.
Several specific improvements were agreed upon and the Committee recommends the
following:
1. The crossing signals at the East Lexington Library should be replaced
with equipment similar to that at the Munroe School. All present at the
meeting place a high priority on this item. Our very preliminary
estimate of cost is $25,000 to $40,000;
2. Zebra stripes should be added to all existing crosswalks across
Massachusetts Avenue;
3. New crosswalks should be placed at Locust Avenue, Tower Road and #1155
Massachusetts Avenue;
4. In order to improve crosswalk visibility, an area on the curb, twenty-
five feet prior to selected crosswalks should be zoned "No Parking" and
painted yellow. Enclosed are sketches outlining these areas;
5. The existing crosswalks at Taft Avenue and Curve Street should be
relocated as shown on the enclosed sketches;
