Eddison, Chairman DATE: 7/30/86 PAGE: Board of Selectmen FROMSUBJECT* Peter M. Chalpin, Chai flan Traffic Committee Traffic Committee f'46 ' League of Women Voters At its meeting of July 16, 1986, the Traffic Safety Committee discussed the League of Women Voters' letter regarding traffic in and around elementary schools. The Committee agrees that there should be uniformity of markings at "School Crossings"; however, the extent and type should be evaluated. Prior to our making a recommendation, we request that the Engineering Department be asked to review all elementary school crossings, and to formulate an overall program, including costs, outlining approprLate painting and signing. We feel it would be important for the outcome of the program for the League to participate in its formulation, and we request that the Board inquire as to the League's willingness to participate. The Committee also concurs with the League's recommendation for side— walks. We feel that sidewalks are an important part of overall traffic safety, and ask that the Engineering Department's school crossing review include sidewalk recommendations. It appears from Mr. Lainge's comments at the 7/29/86 Selectmen's Meeting that the Mass. D.P.W. has changed its policy regarding removing crossing guards at "Standard School Zones", this despite the fact that we were told in 1985 that we would have to remove Mrs. Barabush from the Estabrook School in order to receive a permit. In light of this new information, I am deferring comment on the League's request for standard school zones until the full committee can discuss this matter. Concerning the League's Crossing Guard suggestions, we recommend the following, and Mr. Maclnnes concurs: 1. There is no need for a Crossing Guard at Philip Road and Rockville Avenue. 2. The existing Crossing Guard at Adams Street and Hathaway Road is sufficient, however, her hours should be extended as suggested by the League. 3. A Crossing Guard should be stationed at Waltham Street and Brookside Avenue, both A.M. and P.M., for Clarke Junior High. Those in attendance: Peter M. Chalpin, Dr. Clarke, Mr. Trask, Mr. Mix, Sgt.
