Marshall, Chairman / DATE: October 23, 1985 Board of Selectmen / SUBJECT: Traffic Committee FROM: Peter Chalpin, Chairm Maple Street Speed Limit Traffic Safety Committee Page #1 of 2 At its Meeting of October 23, 1985, the Traffic Safety Committee met with Mrs. Ruth Lynn to discuss her request for reduced speed limits on Maple Street, Lowell Street and Summer Street. As outlined in my report of September 11, 1985, the Police Department performed radar studies on these streets, and the results are as follows: CURRENT 85th PERCENTILE SPEED SPEED LIMIT FROM L.F.D. STUDY Maple Street Eastbound 40 MPH 45 MPH Maple Street Westbound 40 MPH 40 MPH Lowell Street Northbound 40 MPH 40 MPH Lowell Street Southbound 40 MPH 45 MPH Summer Street Northbound 30 MPH 40 MPH Summer Street Southbound 30 MPH 45 MPH As you can see, speed limits would increase in four of the six areas checked. With this data in hand, and knowing that the State will increase the existing speed limits if their studies yeild the same results as ours, the Committee unanimously recommends that no action be taken on Mrs. Lynn's request. Traffic Committee Maple Street Speed Limit Page #2 of 2 October 23, 1985 The Committee also feels it is important to point out that, although we do not condone it, traffic proceeding on these three streets, at the increased 85th percentiles shown above, is doing so safely, and in an orderly fashion on the whole. This being the case, it would logically follow that traffic traveling at the existing posted speed limits would do so more safely, and in a more orderly fashion. It is therefore also recommended that the Police Department include these three streets in their selective enforcement program. Those in attendance: Peter M.
