DATE: September 11, 1985 Board of Selectmen SUBJECT: Traffic Committee FROM: Peter Chalpin, Chairma, Maple Street Traffic Safety Committ- 4 Meeting of July 25, 1985, the Traffic Safety Committee met with Mrs. Ruth Lynn to discuss her petition from the Maple Street area requesting lowering the speed limit on Maple Street and Lowell Street from 40 MPH to 30 MPH. It was explained to Mrs. Lynn that both of these streets are State highways. We also explained the Speed Zoning process and suggested that, since the speed limit is more likely to go up, rather than down, she may wish to reconsider the request. Mrs. Lynn agreed, and said she would talk to her neighbors, explain the situation and let the Committee know their decision. The petitioners have decided to proceed with the request. I have contacted Mass. D.P.W. and asked what options the Town will have should a new study reveal that the 85th percentile speed is now 45 MPH. The answer was, "No options". These roads being State highways, the State will post them at 45 MPH. Since the Committee is all but convinced that the 85th percentile speed will be at least 45 MPH in some areas, we have requested the Police Department do a preliminary radar study prior to our making a final recommendation to the Board.
