TOWN OF LEXINGTON
TRAFFIC SAFETY ADVISORY COMMITTEE
MEMORANDUM
TO: ,john C. Eddison, Chairman DATE: February 27, 1987
Board of Selectmen
FROM: Peter M. Chalpin, Ch-. +i-n SUBJECT: Traffic - Whipple Hill
Traffic Committee ,n
/'1(j
At its meeting of February 25, 1987, the Traffic Safety Committee met with Mr. Ma::
Snodderly and others concerning Traffic on Whipple Hill.
As you know, this neighborhood is used as a cut-through by traffic avoiding the
congestion at Lowell Street and Winchester Drive. It was requested by Mr. Snodderly
that a right turn lane be added to Lowell Street, to allow traffic to move more
freely onto Winchester Drive. While we feel that this modification would have
limited effect, we told Mr. Snodderly that we would recommend to the Board that
Mass. D.P.W (Lowell Street is a State Highway) be asked to consider the request
The following are also recommended:
1 Increased enforcement of the existing 30MPH speed limit;
2. Installation of a small island on Russell Road at Whipple Road, similar
to the island on Walnut Street at Concord Avenue;
3 Installation of a "Stop" sign on Whipple Road, southbound at Russell
Road;
4 Installation of "Stop" signs on Locke Lane at Whipple Road, Fiske Road
at Whipple Road, Fairlawn Lane at Fiske Road, Fairlawn Lane at Lowell
Street, Whipple Road at Lowell Street, Fiske Road at Winchester Drive
and Russell Road at Winchester Drive.
