Eddison, Chairman DATE: December 12, 196E Board of Selectmen FROM: Peter M Chalpin, r air an SUBJECT: Traffic Safety Committee Traffic Committee n Meeting - 12/03/BE Traffic - Lake Street Page #1 of :. At its meeting of December 3, 1986, the Traffic Safety Committee met ..ith Mrs Jean Baxter regarding her request for a "Stop" sign on Lake Street at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue. The Committee is not in favor of installing a "Stop" sign at this location for the following reasons: 1 . Lake Street is not a heavily traveled street. it leads to Columbus Street which is a dead end. As a result of this there is very little through traffic. Most of the traffic consists of residents. 2 The Town parking regulations prohibit parking within 20 feet of an intersec- tion. This does not have to be posted or marked on the curb; 3 The hedge bordering the property at the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Lake Street is low enough that it does not obstruct any view The rising of the hill on Massachusetts Avenue does restrict an operator's view to a degree, but does not create an undue hazard; 4. For 1986, there were no accidents at the intersection of Lake Street and Massachusetts Avenue. The intersection of Cedar Street and Massachusetts Avenue which does have a "Stop" sign had two accidents for 1986 The Committee understands and shares Mrs. Ba::ten's concern for traffic at inter- sections, but cannot agree that it is virtually impossible for a Lake Street driver to come safely out onto Massachusetts Avenue The occurrence of a near accident does not always necessitate the installation of a traffic sign Traffic Safetj Committee Traffic Committee Meeting - 12/03/86 Traffic - Lake Street December 12, 1986 Page #2 of 2 The Committee feels that an operator exiting from Lake Street or any other side street has the responsibility to exercise caution. The installation of a "Stop" sign in this instance is not warranted. Those in Attendance: Peter M. Chalpin, Chairman Dr. Eric Clarke Mr Trask Mr. Maloney Sgt.
