MEMORANDUM
jUiV 410
TO: James F. Crain, Chairman DATE: 6/22/83 PAGE:
Board of Selectmen
FROM: Peter M. Chalpin, Chair 'an SUBJECT: Safety Measures
Traffic Safety Committe- L Hathaway Rd./East St./Adams St.
At its meetings of 3/30 , 5/17 and 6/22 the Traffic Safety
Committee discussed Mrs . Miller' s request for safety measures
at Adams Street, East Street and Hathaway Road. Mrs . Miller
attended the March and June meetings .
Between these meetings , individual Committee members spent
time at the location, observing traffic and pedestrians. In
addition, the Engineering Division gathered vehicle and pedestrian
volume data for the Committee. This observation and information
leads us to recommend that a Stop sign be installed on Hathaway
Road at East Street.
Much discussion and consideration was devoted to the
identification of a problem at this location relating to Junior
High students crossing. The result was that no problem could
be identified. This being the case, the Committee unanimously
voted to recommend that Mrs. Miller' s request for additional
crossing guard coverage and crossing lights be denied. In the
Committee ' s opinion neither is justified.
However, we suggested that, in the fall, a time be arranged
with the school principal to have the Safety Officer visit the
students and present his program to re-emphasize the do' s and don 'ts
of pedestrian safety.
Mrs. Miller was pleased with this suggestion and agreed to
co-ordinate.
