JUN G8 82
MEMORANDUM
To: Alfred S. Busa, Chairman DATE: 6/28/82 ' PAGE:
Board of Selectmen
FROM: Peter M. Chalpin, Chai SUBJECT: Traffic
Traffic Safety Committe Mason Street - Mr.Adamian
At its meeting of June 16, 1982 the Traffic Safety Committee
discussed the letter from Mr. Adamian regarding vehicles damaging his
property at #17 Mason Street. It was agreed that driver inattention
was the major causative factor in the accidents to which Mr. Adamian
refers. Compounding the inattention problem is the presence of brush
and shrubs at the edge of the road in the area. Signs are in place
indicating a sharp curve at that location, but they are nearly blocked
by overgrowing branches.
Our first recommendation is that the brush and shrubs be removed
from the right-of-way. Further, we recommend that a centerline be
painted and that chevrons be installed on the roadside to define the
curve. This approach was used some years ago on Lowell Street and
proved very effective.
After inspecting this location, the Committee felt it appropriate
to comment on what is becoming an increasing problem, specifically shrubs,
trees and brush within the right-of-way. Throughout Town, neighborhoods
wishing to create and maintain a rural and private atmosphere have
planted shrubs and trees within the right-of-way and have allowed them
to grow out to the edge of the road. Mason Street is a perfect example
of this. The shoulder area is lost to these plantings causing sight dis-
tance problems, particularly at intersections. Additional signing and
pavenent marking alone will not solve the situation on Mason Street. As
in the past, the signs will become blocked. The shoulder areas should
be cleared and maintained. The Committee feels that finding a process
by which this is accomplished will be a difficult task, as it would be
costly to both the Town and the neighbors, but it is an issue which de-
serves consideration.
