Busa, ChairmanDATE: 11/16/„1 PAGE` Board of Selectmen FR❑M: Peter M. Chalpin, Chairman SUBJECT: Follen Road Traffic Safety Committee Crosswalk Request At its meeting of October 21, 1981 , the Traffic Safety Committee discussed the request from Smith Avenue residents for a crosswalk at Smith Avenue and Follen Road. When the present system of crosswalks in the Locust Avenue and Bowman School area was laid out last year, the police department and the engineering department discussed at considerable length the merits of a crosswalk at Smith Avenue . It was felt then that a crosswalk here would serve a false sense of security for the children, and it was re- commended that Smith Avenue be used as a safer route to Locust Avenue. This opinion has not changed. Last year, at the insistance of several parents Officer Mills , acting as the police department' s Safety Officer, worked out a plan which permitted the children to cross Follen Road at Smith Avenue in the event that they did not choose to follow the other route (Smith to Locust) . Parents seemed comfortable with this alternative which Officer Mills then demonstrated with a group of children and parents. However, lack of sidewalks and insufficient sight distances do not support a crosswalk here. The committee recognized that Smith to Locust presents a slightly longer walk for the children, but considered this a safer route by comparison. It is therefore recommended that the request for an additional crosswalk be denied. Those in attendance : Capt.
