FROM Traffic Committee LEXINGTON PLANNING BOARD
Mr. Robert Cataldo
T40 Board of Selectmen OF
DATE September 2, 1971 FILE REF
As statec in our letter of April 20, 1971, in the opinion of the Traffic
Committee the installation of a guard rail in the grass plot separating the
sides, alk from the pavement on Waltham St. is not warranted or necessary,
rather than just expensive and time-consuming.
I have discussed the matter of an additional pedestrian walkway across the
Jr. High School construction site with Mr. Whitman of the Permanent Building
Committee. He concurs with the earlier position of the School Committee
chairman that, while the school is under construction, the builder controls
the area and would be responsible for any accident to outsiders permitted on
the site. Crossing the construction area containing excavations, stored
materials, moving trucks and equipment would be infinitely r._ore hazardous
than the use of a sidewalk along Waltham St. , particularly since it would be
impossible to prevent children from straying off the designated path.
The Traffic Committee reiterates its position that no special problem is evi-
dent now, but that a dangerous situation would be created if the builder could
be induced to permit children on the construction site. We recommend no action
until the new school is completed.
