mom-Traffic Committee SUBJECT" Historic Sites Sign
The request of the Chamber of Commerce that a "Historic Sites" sign be erected at
the Waltham St.-Mass. Ave. intersection, pointing to the Battle Green, has been
discus ed by the Traffic Committee.
While we;,are in accord with the underlying idea, the specific proposal raises a number
of concerns and questions as follows:
1. A stranger arriving at the intersection on Waltham St. would have little time to '
recognize the sign and act on it, the delay and distraction may cause traffic problems
and increase the probability of an accident. A warning sign should be placed some
500 or more feet before the intersection to give advance notice of the left turn ahead.
2. From the traffic point of view it would be preferable to direct tourists to a
safer, more convenient route via Worthen Rd. and Mass. Ave. , approaching the Battle
Green from the west. This would be compatible with the existing directional sign at
Five Forks and would require a directional sign on Waltham St. for a left turn west onto
Worthen Rd.
3. Since historic sites include Munroe Tavern and the Minute Man Park, as well as the
Battle Green, it would be best to develop a uniform distinctive system of signs iden-
tifying the best tourist route. The Bicentennial Committee, the Chamber of Commerce and,
possibly, the Historical Society should be asked to cooperate in this undertaking.
Since the signs in question are not traffic regulation signs, their funding should come
from a different source. Assistance from the State or from the Min. Man Park (which
has the right to erect off-site directional signs leading to the Park) may be considered.
We believe it would be undesirable to erect one sign as requested by the Chamber be-
cause of the traffic safety and convenience reasons referred to in para. 1 above.
