Dr. H. Smith's complaint - , problem carted bydouble solid lines on
Bedford St. prohibiting left band t was discussed by the Traffic Committee
at its Ming on November 30, 1971. it is ou, :,:opion that Dr. Smith has a ,
valid complaint and4hat not only the veterinarylospitan but the motel, tennis
club, armary and several residences are affected Ey the situation. Since no
provision exists for reversing direction at Hartwell Ave. intersection, motorists
must travel considerable distance into Bedford or On ;Hartwell Ave. and make a
C-turn, adding to traffic congestion.
We believe that the ultimate solution must be a redesign of Bedford St. and,
particularly, of the Hartwell Ave. intersection to permit a reversal of direc-
tion, such as by means of a split rotary. Until this happens, property owners
on Bedford St. should be permitted to enter and leave their driveways in a
reasonable manner and without violation of the law prohibiting the crossing of
double yellow line.
Since this portion of Bedford St. is a state highway we recommend that the
Selectmen request the Mass. Dept. of Public Works to provide a reasonable num-
ber of breaks in the double yellow lines for left hand turns (or to indicate
by signs or otherwise that crossing the lines is permitted for necessary left
turns).
