,' MEMORANDUM dr,ROMV
To Margery M. Battin, Chairman DATE March 15, 1979PAGE. 1
FROM Board of Selectmen
SUBJECT:
Peter M. Chalpin, Acting Chairman tV Bedford Street and
Traffic Safety Committee Eldred Street
3
At its meeting of March 15, 1979, the Traffic Safety Committee again re-
viewed its position relative to the intersection of Bedford Street and Eldred
Street. As you know, Bedford Street in this area is a State highway and, as such,
is under Mass. DPW jurisdiction for anything which takes place there.
As you also know, over the years, many proposals have been put forth for
improvement of traffic conditions on Bedford Street, from Route 128 to Hartwell
Avenue. These proposals have included the Hartwell Avenue connector, the widening
of Bedford Street and the extension of Hadley Road to the jughandle at Hartwell
Avenue, none of which were acceptable to the Townspeople.
One alternative proposal which has surfaced many times, and is again before
us, would signalize the intersection of Bedford Street and Eldred Street. While
such an alternative would aid those motorists wishing to exit from Eldred Street
during the peak hours, the hazards created on Route 128 would clearly make this
alternative unacceptable. Both the Traffic Safety Committee and the Mass. DPW,
who control the intersection, are therefore opposed to the implementation of the
proposal.
It has further been suggested that pedestrian signals be installed at this
location. The warrant for pedestrian signals requires that, for any 8 consecutive
hours, a minimum of 150 pedestrians cross the major street. This warrant is clearly
not satisfied at this time.
With regard to removing the left turn restriction on Saturdays and Sundays,
the Committee is in agreement and feels that this should be done.
In conclusion, the Committee unanimously voted to recommend to the Board
that the request for any type of signals at this location be denied. It was further
voted that the left turn restriction be removed on Saturday and Sunday.
