Traffic Safety Committee Review
As per your request, I have reviewed the Warrants for Right Turn on
Red as they relate to the signal installations in Lexington which are
under the Town's jurisdiction. A copy of the warrants is enclosed.
gen the Committee reviewed the Right Turn on Red issue initially,
we found that under Section A of the warrants items 3 and 4 could not be
met by our intersections. With the exception of the Worthen/Mass and
Worthen/Waltham locations, we felt lane widths were inadequate. In addition,
with the exception of Lexington Center and Concord/Waltham, all of our
equipment is actuated, and modification would involve considerable expense.
In Section B of the warrants, which cites conditions under which Right
Turn on Red should be prohibited, we found item #3 applied to all of cur
intersections. All of our locations have exclusive pedestrian phases,
modification of which would not only involve new signal permits, but also,
and again, considerable expense.
With this in mind, it would be my recommendation that, until the
criteria for Right Turn on Red are relaxed to permit Lexington to meet
the warrants, the prohibition be maintained townwide.
