TO. M ry W. Miley, Chairman `
Board of Selectmen DATE 6/26/80 PAGE
FROM Peter M. Chalpin, Acting Chairman
SUBJECT Traffic
Traffic Safety Committee Kennecott Copper
Please be advised that the Engineering Division has reviewed, for the
Committee, the request from Mr. Niles M. Schlegal of Kennecott Copper for
the installation of a mirror on Spring Street across from the Kennecott exit.
Experience and research into such mirrors has shown that their effec-
tiveness is limited at best, since they are dramatically affected by weather
conditions and are an irresistible target for vandals. Further, it was noted
that they should be employed only as a last resort and when no other feasible
alternative exists.
We feel that a feasible alternative exists in this case, and that is
the clearing of the line of sight on the left as one is leaving the complex.
As you may recall, a similar request was received from a home on Concord
Avenue some time ago, and that a solution was arrived at through clearing
and removal of an embankment.
We believe that an improvement in actual visibility is the proper way
to proceed in the Kennecott case as well, and therefore recommend that the
request for a mirror be denied.
