F R O M Traf f ic Committee . T Robert Cataldo Chairman F Board of Selectmen D A T E ' November 23, 1R70 F I L E R E F. Thoreau Rdittee The Traffic Committee has investigated the request for warning signs on Thoreau Rd. Our findings and recommendations are as follows: 1. The maximum grade of Thoreau Rd. is 9.9%, the center line radius of the curve is 159 ft. Neither is excessive in itself, but the combination justifies the measures recommended below. 2. A warning Sign indicating a dangerous curve ahead is warrented by the condi- tions according to the inclinometer tests conducted (over 15 degrees at 30 mph) . 3. An "'advisory speed plate" indicating safe speed in the curve may be installed with the approval of the State Dept. of Public Works only. Such speed plate is advisory and not intended as an enforceable speed limit. 4. It is recommended that curbing be installed along the curve ta prevent cars from running over grass plots. It must be noted, however, that there is no visual evidence of this happening and the Police Dept. has no record of any traffic accidents on Thoreau Rd. 5• The view down from Lowell St. is unobstructed and a sign is therefore not warranted to indicate the hill. A sign "children crossing" is not warranted at any particular point and, at any rate, there is no provision for such sign in Ma.ssachusetts. Alexander V.
