MEMORANDUM
TO' Allan F. Kenney, Chairman DATE. 2/7/74 PAGE:
Board of Selectmen
FROM John J . McSweeney, Chairman SUBJECT• First Baptist Church
Traffic Safety Committee Premises
At its meeting of 2/5/74, the Traffic Safety Committee discussed
both Mr. Jaquith's and Mr. Wilson's letters. It was the opinion of the
Committee that the alternative to the circular driveway, namely reserved
curb parking, as offered by Mr. Jaquith has no bearing on whether or not
the Commission grants the church a permit. As for the construction of
the driveway, the Traffic Committee actually has no say since it will be
on private property. Relative to the removal of parking spaces, the
Committee would like to reiterate its position as stated in our memo to
the Board of 5/24/72 in answer to a similar request from the Arlex Auto
School . "The use of on-street parking by one particular business would
reduce the total parking space available to the public, making an already
bad shortage even worse. Furthermore, it would be improper to withdraw
any part of a public street for private use by anyone. This could be a
very harmful precedent encouraging every tenant in the downtown district
to request reserved parking, a request which, obviously, is impossible to
satisfy."
