MEMORANDUM
Allan F. Kenney, Chairman
TO Board of Selectmen DATE. June 18, 1973 PAGE. 1
FROM John J. McSweeney, Chairman SUBJECT' Traffic Meeting
Traffic Committee June 13, 1973
At our regular meeting held on Wednesday, June 13, 1973 (voted
Friday, June 15 at 10:00 a.m.) the Traffic Safety Committee reviewed
the Board's requests for the following locations:
1. Meriam Street - Parking Lot Extension
2. Meriam Street - Parking (All Day)
3. Craft Cleaners « Rear Parking (All Day)
4. Massachusetts Avenue - Parking Woburn Street to Wallis Court
5. Muzzey Street - One Way
6. Lillian Road and Lowell Street
Those in attendance were:
James Corr - Chief - Police Department
Kenneth Briggs - Director - Planning Board
John J. McSweeney Director - Public Works/Engineering
Peter Chalpin - Senior Engineer - Public Works/Engineering Traffic
1. Meriam Street Parking Lot Extension
It was agreed that Peter Chalpin would meet with Mr. Warren Empey,
Manager of Operations, to prepare the necessary plans and work orders to
begin this extension. Perimeter parking would be laid out so as to maximize
the area.
2., 3., & 4. Central Business District Parking
These locations were reviewed, and the Committee finds no traffic
problem. We find, after study, that existing traffic and parking conditions
in these areas are functioning properly both on a short ter and all-day
basis. In our professional opinion, these requests '" }1 by small pressure
groups cannot be resolved by robbing "Peter to pay Paul". It is already
a matter of record that we need a minimum of 200 to 250 spaces if we are to
relieve on street parking in the area adjacent to the Central Business District.
The Committee would like to provide adjacent parking to all our professional
and business establishments, but with this shortage we cannot see reestablishing
priorities and reassigning parking to other on street locations.
5. Muzzey Street - One Way
No action - further study

6. Lowell Street and Lillian Road
The Committee reviewed Mi.. Joseph J. Volante's letter of complaint
regarding this intersection. Our findings are as follows:
1. As a secondary Road, Lowell Street is under continued
surveillance by the Lexington Police Department.
2. No extraordinary history of traffic accidents - as stated.
3. Poor sight distant from the Lillian Road approach.
4. No stop sign.
The Committee agreed that this intersection had no unusual traffic
conditions to warrant the classification as a hazardous location. It did
agree to request the Engineering Division to study the location for Stop
Sign Warrants and to improve the existing sight distance.
