/ ; MEMORANDUM
TO Board of Selectmen DATE. April 11, 1972PAGE.
FROM Traffic Committee SUBJECT' Meriam St. Parking
The conditions on Meriam St. are better, now that the snow is gone and the full
width of pavement is available (35 ft. at Central Block and 33 ft. beyond the RR).
The Traffic Committee is of the opinion that parking on Meriam St. does not rep-
resent as serious problem at this time as the overall shortage of parking in
Lexington Center. The Committee believes that the refusal of the Town Meeting to
approve paving additional off-street parking space must be taken as an indication
that the Town does not consider the present level of congestion in Meriam St. as
unacceptable.
It is, therefore, the recommendation of the Committee that parking be allowed on
Meriam St. until alternate space becomes available, either in the Meriam St. park-
ing lot or elsewhere. At that time it is our intention to recommend that parking
be allowed along the northerly side of Meriam St. (including metered spaces near
Mass. Ave.) and prohibited along the southerly or southeasterly side from Mass. Ave.
to Oakland St. , thus providing better sight distances from the several exits along
that side. To restrict the parking now in the absence of alternate off-street
space would force the parkers to move elsewhere, where the pavement may not be as
wide as in this section of Meriam St.
