McSweeney, Chairman SUBJECT' Traffic Conditions - Traffic Safety Committee Bowman School Area At its meeting of October 21 , 1975, the Traffic Safety Committee dis- cussed the petition from the Bowman School Association regarding traffic conditions in the Bowman School area. Since this meeting, the area has been studied extensively by both the Police Department and the Engineering Division. Regarding the four points presented by the Association, the Committee, based on information gathered by the Police Department and Engineering Division, has the following comments: I . We agree that crosswalks should be painted at several locations. Upon your approval , the Engineering Division will determine the exact locations. 2. We disagree that a police officer or aide is necessary to assist children at arrival and dismissal times. Our ob- servations have revealed no difficulties on the part of any children arriving at, or leaving from, the school . 3. As you know, the 20. mph School Zone can only be placed on a street abutting school property. In this case, such c: a zone would have to go on Philip Road and would extend from Rockville Avenue, approximately 6001 northerly. As the main entrance to the school does not face Philip Road, and as through-traffic on this section of Philip Road is minimal , we can see no justification for considering this kk% type of school zone. 4. With respect to "School" signs, the Committee recommends three more be installed, two on Philip Road and one on Worthen Road. In addition, we recommend that the School Department install a sign at each end of the school drive- way notifying motorists that the driveway is just that, and, being so, is closed to through traffic.
