Board of Selectmen
FROM: John J . McSweeney, Chairman L SUBJECT
Traffic Safety Committee. Meriam St. - Hancock St. Traffic
Merriam Hill Association
At its meeting of 5/6/75, the Traffic Safety Committee discussed the
letter from William T. Spencer, President of the Merriam HiII Association,
regarding traffic conditions on Meriam Street and Hancock Street. Six
requests were made by the Association. The Committee would like to re-
spond to each.
Request "A": Public Works has been requested to check for any missing
speed limit signs on Hancock Street and to replace any
which are missing.
Request "B": As you are aware, the "Heavy Trucking Excluded" signs
currently on Hancock Street cannot be legally enforced.
We are unable to obtain permits for these signs be-
cause we cannot provide an alternate route for these
trucks. With this in mind, the Committee recommends
that these signs be removed, as the circumstances
surrounding their presence is contrary to the
policies we and the Board are using as guidelines.
Request "C": "No Passing" signs cannot be installed if the passing
sight distance is 400 feet or more. The Engineering
Department has reported to the Committee that the
passing sight distance exceeds 400 feet between
Bedford Street and Hayes Avenue. Between Hayes
Avenue and Adams Street however, we recommend that
a solid yellow center line be installed to prevent
passing.
Request "D": Strict enforcement has been and will continue to be
a policy with the Lexington Police Department.
Request "E". As we stated in our memo of 8/22/73 regarding a similar
request, we see no problem in either entering or leaving
Meriam Street, and recommend that this latest request
to remove a parking meter be denied.
Request "F": The restriction of parking on Meriam Street between the
B & M Railroad and Patriots Drive to one side only has
been discussed several times and put into effect once.
However, it was felt that the benefits gained could not
be equated with the loss of valuable parking spaces. The
