MEMORANDUM
To Allan F. Kenney, Chairman DATE 4/24/75 PAGE.
Board of Selectmen
FROM SUBJECT' Grove St. @ Eldred St. -
John J . McSweeney, Chairman
Mr. Greenberg
Traffic Safety Committee
At its meetings of 3/18/75 and 4/15/75, the Traffic Safety Committee
discussed Mr. Greenberg's letter regarding school children walking down the
westerly side of Grove Street from the north, crossing Eldred Street and
proceeding along the westerly side of Grove Street to the crossing guard
at the Estabrook School . In his letter, Mr. Greenberg expresses his con-
cern for the safety of these children when they cross Eldred Street without
supervision. While we on the Committee are also concerned for the safety
of these children and all other children who must walk to school , we can
see no greater risk involved in crossing Eldred Street than is involved in
crossing School Street at Massachusetts Avenue to attend the Maria Hastings
School . However, we offer the following for your consideration: The
installation of a sidewalk along the easterly side of Grove Street from
Eldred Street to the Estabrook School driveway and the relocation of the
crossing guard to the intersection of Eldred Street and Grove Street.
The Engineering Department has informed us that the cost of such a
sidewalk, approximately 300 feet long, and the accompanying retaining wall
which would be required, will be at least $20,000.
