Board of Selectmen FROM John J McSweeney, Chairman SUBJECT• Burlington St Traffic Traffic Safety Committee Simonds Rd. Crosswalk At its meeting of 11/5/74, the Traffic Safety Committee discussed Mr Giusti's letter regarding Burlington Street traffic and Simonds Road crosswalk The Committee voted to recommend to the Board that the cross- walk at Simonds Road be installed. The Committee also recommends the installation of three "Playground" signs in this area. One will be placed on the Grove Street approach and one each on the Burlington Street approaches. With respect to speed zoning on Burlington Street the Committee would like to make two points First, according to the fundamental speed law, unless otherwise posted, the speed limit where houses are 200 feet apart or less is understood to be 30 m.p.h. However, we are not allowed to post speed limit signs based solely on this law Second, as you know, in order to establish a speed zone, a radar speed study must be run From this information, the 85- percentile speed is calculated and the speed limit set at this figure. The Committee assures the Board that were Burlington Street to be posted based on this type of study, the speed limit would be at least 30 m.p.h. and definitely no less The Committee recommends no action on this request. pmc/mbw cc: Traffic Safety Committee Chief Corr Capt Lima Kenneth Briggs Peter M Chalpin Copy to Board Members Town Manager 1/24 F TM-1 MP-2M
