MEMORANDUM
ti
TO Howard M. Kassler, Chairman DATE. 7/30/76 PAGE.
Board of Selectmen
FROM John J . McSweeney, Chairman SUBJECT' Bedford Street &
Traffic Safety Committee Harrington Road
Traffic
At its meeting of 7/20/76, the Traffic Safety Committee again
discussed the traffic at the intersection of Bedford Street and
Harrington Road. Without having performed a detailed study, our
observations, and a check of the accident records for this location,
have revealed that a traffic signal installation based on volume,
number of accidents and interuption of continuous traffic, is war-
ranted.
However, because of the impact a signal installation would
have on the Green Area, we recommend that any traffic signal pro-
posals be tabled. We feel that such a restrictive measure as a
signal at this location could very possibly cause flow problems
throughout the center, which could only be corrected through the
use of a co-ordinated signal system with signals at Woburn Street
and at the Minute Man.
In the past, we have evaluated many alternatives for alleviating
congestion at this location. They include extending Worthen,Road,
i .e. opening Hancock Avenue, widening Harrington Road and having one-
way flow around the Green. These alternatives were rejected as not
being warranted in the past, and it is our feeling that they are not
warranted at this time. However, should the Board feel that any of
these are warranted, the Committee will re-evaluate them.
Nevertheless, it is our recommendation that signals at this
intersection not be considered.
