Report Ta The Voiers Of Lexirigton .

Your caznmittee has studied the requirernents of a new Senior High
5chool building and developed prelisninazy plans o# a building which we
believe will satisfy the Tor=n's needs. Our reasoraing in the development
of these plans is outlined in the folloring z-eport.
We xecommend that the Torvn consider the #ollaving program:
i I. Accept the prelimaaa}r plans as gresented.
2. Authorize the pz•eparaeion of camplete plans and specificatiozas so that
tese bids rnay be procured and presented to the 1948 Towvn 1Vleeting.
T`o do this, favorable action must be taken on Article 4-of theVai'rant.
3. If aeasonabJe bads are receivedt the 1948 Totiun Nleeting, authorize the
! issuance of bonds fo a term of tnenty years to finance the construction
`: of the building. '
4. Start the building constxuctian during the summer of 198 so that the ',
a new building rraaj be occupied an the 'aIl of 199. Hovever, a it is ',
3 found at this time that the current constzuction costs see unreasonale
i
re would recammend osrponing lction until the following year chen
it cou3d be reconsidered.
We advise this program because it is the recomrnendation of both the '
i School Commiktee and the Niehol's Report that the new huilding is needed ,
' no`r. Even by follawing tiiis program, the earliest we could hope to occup ',
' the building lould be the fall o 19F9, at vhich time the need izll have ',
,
` become even greatei.

At the present time our ,unior-Senior High School is badlq ovcrcrowded
with an enrollrnent a 1100 students.
s
Due to this large enrollment our regular classroams are congested and it
has been necessary ta convert for classroom use basement roams that are
I
far from satisfactary.
` The Cafeteria is so averloaded that our children do not have time to be
served properly, or eat rvhat they are served in a healthy mannex'.
These conditions are far from conducive to the maintainance of the high
standard af education desired by all af us for our children.
By 1949 we anticipate an enrollnrxent of at least 1200 in the Junior-Senior
` High School which rviil aggravate these conditions still mare. By f960 this
total is estimated at 16bQ ,
W hat Shcll We Do?
The report published last ycar by the Schoal Committee, recosnmended
the construcrion of a new 5enior High School and the use of the present ',
buildng for a runior High School only. TJe have based our progran upon '

T he Nec.v Building
The azchatects, Perry, SEau and Hepburn, have designed a building or
the particular needs of L,exington. It is tra litional in character 6ut modern ,
in conseructian and arrangenient--no compramise having been made rvith
eithex eficieny or economy in making a design that is sympathetic uith our
colanial history and the houses on the green.
A nei building should satisfy our needs fox at Ieast ten rears, quite
' possibIy longer. We find from an examinatian of present elernentary school
enrailment as tiyCll as our zapidly increasing birth rate that it is higlly
possile that tie wll have 800 senior higka school students by around 19b0.
In orcter to hold down present cosrs e have designed a building to have a
capacity of 800 students (our estimated enxollment in 1960) and have so
arranged it that additional class-ooms can 6e added later to increase its
capacity to 1000 oa• 200 withouC overloading such faciliries as the gym-
nasium, auditorium and cafeteria. We have planned these facilities in this
nanner as rve do nat believe that it is gractical to add to thern later.
The complete 6uilding contains 82 usahle rooms in addition to tailets,
closets, corridors and stairrrays. Grouped according to geneaal t}rpe, they are
as follovs:
Reular Tcaching Rooms (35) Servtce Roonts (34)

What Wir The Buiid2ng Cost?
Ve have had a building estimate made rvhich is based on pz-esent day
costs. These prices are admittedy higher than ever before in our hiseory
but Chey do represent a yard stick by which we may measure ouz• possible
future expenditures.
1. Costs of bildeng 1,59,000
2, Architecturat and mechaoical eogineering fees
a. Bid plans and specifications for architectural, structural. g7,450
heaEeng, plumbing and electrical work
6. Architectural and engincering details and supervisio❑ of
constncEion 31,800
3. Frniture aod fixtures . 9g,000
, 4. Roads, grading and landscaping I=FI,400
''otal es[imated costs 1,9}8,654
ToEaE cubic#eet-2,Q54,600 Cost per cuhic #oot--95 cents
Since btilding costs are eYcessively high at this time, due not only ta high ',
prices fa• material and labor btEk iso the scarcity of 6oth, it is qt3ite con- '
ceivable that cubic casts Gvill decline So to 85 cents. This would nat seern
to be an unreasonable figLire for whicti to hope.
This vould mean a total cost of approxirnately $a,ryoo,000•
