March 20, 1972
The 1971_72 Cary Lecture Committee was appointed by the
Town Moderator, acting under a vote of the 1971 Annual Town Meeting.
No town funds are appropriated for the operations of the Committee;
rather, its programs are made possible by a budget of twenty-five
hundred dollars assigned by the trustees of the Isaac Harris Cary
Educational Fund, in accordance with the wills of the Cary sisters.
Three programs were planned for this season's Cary Lectures.
The first event featured Dr. Edwin 0. Reischauer, University Pro-
fessor at Harvard and formerly Ambassador to Japan, on December 12,
1971. A large and appreciative audience heard Dr. Reischauer speak
on the subject ',Looking Ahead in Asian.
On January 29, 1972, the Committee was honored to present
the Hon. William 0. Douglas, Associate Justice of the United States
Supreme Court, on the topic "The Conservation of Man". An overflow
crowd attended.
Finally, on April 9, 1972, the Committee plans to offer
Mr. Stanton A. Waterman, noted underwater explorer and photographer,
in a film lecture entitled "The Two Worlds of Polynesian.
The Committee had hoped to present a fourth event, a daytime
program for children of unusual quality. Unfortunately, this was
not possible under the budget limitation.
Respectfully submitted,
