HomeMy WebLinkAbout2390 Resolution of Town Meeting regarding expenses related to the Civil War, no date but presumed 1863Whereas, by a Law of Congress a call is made upon our citizen soldiers to join their heroic brethren in the field and participate with them in the honor of putting down the present in- famous Rebellion, and so completing the good work in which they have recently had such glorious success; And Whereas the soldiers in the fields subjected to numerous trials, should be relieved from all anxiety concerning the comfortable support of his family in his abscence; And Whereas it is the duty of all citizens to aid in the glorious object of sustaining the Government in its struggle against the grossest perfidy and blackest treason, by encouraging the gallant defenders of our free institutions: It is therefore, Voted, That the Selectmen be authorized and empowered to make such provisions for the support of the families of all those who enter the service of the United States under this call, as they have been authorized to make for the families of those who have therefore entered the service. Voted That the Town Treasurer be authorized under the directions of the Selectmen, to bor- row in behalf of the Town, such sum or sums of money as be necessary to meet any draft which may be made by the Selectmen upon the Treasury, in carry- ing into effect the preceeding vote. Accepted by the Town July, 25, 1863
