Chair Lee Noel Chase called the May 1, 2025 Historic Districts Commission meeting to order at
6:05pm.
Richard Neumeier and Brien Cooper were acting as voting member for this meeting.
FORMAL HEARINGS
Chair Lee Noel Chase opened the formal hearing for 1625 Massachusetts Avenue, exterior
alterations (Signage) in the Battle Green Historic District

Douglas Lucente explained the proposed plans for temporary installation of a to -scale replica sign of the
1875 Arch. The arch will be placed on the Town Office Building lawn from April 22, 2025 through April
20, 2026.
The Commissioners agreed that the proposed arch plans were appropriate.

Motion was granted and seconded to issue a Certificate of Appropriateness for exterior changes to
1625 Massachusetts Avenue. Motion carried, All in favor.

The applicant Susanna Whitman on behalf of First Parish Unitarian Church and designer Nita Sturiale
described the proposed benches, posts and signage plans.
The Commissioners reviewed the proposed plans and denied this application. Dan Hisel was deferred to
serve as the liaison for this application. Some commissioners stated that they would keep an open mind
toward any redesign.
Bill Erickson, 10 Bedford Street, stated that adding any signs, regardless of the message, at that particular
location on the green is inappropriate.
Lee Noel Chase made a motion to approve this submittal as presented. Edward Adelman Seconded.
Roll Call Vote: Brien Cooper — No, Edward Adelman — No, Lee Noel Chase — No, Robin Lovett —
Abstain, Richard Neumeier — No. The motion was denied with one abstention. A Notice of
Determination will be issued for the disapproval of this application.

The contractor John Campoverde and homeowner Glora Wallace explained the proposed reroofing and
solar panels plans for the structure at 1444 Mass Ave.
The Commissioners agreed that the proposed reroofing and solar panels plans were appropriate on the
condition of modifying solar panels plans to remove those two outlier panels. Edward Adelman will serve
as liaison for this application.
No public comments.

Motion was granted and seconded to issue a Certificate of Appropriateness for exterior changes as
amended to 1444 Massachusetts Avenue on the condition of modifying solar panels plans to remove
those two outlier panels. Motion carried, All in favor.

Chair Lee Noel Chase opened the continued hearing for 611 Massachusetts Avenue, exterior
alterations (Exterior Colors) in the East Village Historic District

The architect Colin Smith explained the proposed exterior colors plans for the new construction at 611
Mass Ave.
The Commissioners agreed that the proposed arch plans were appropriate.

Motion was granted and seconded to issue a Certificate of Appropriateness for exterior changes to
611 Massachusetts Avenue. Motion carried, All in favor.
INFORMAL HEARINGS
Chair Lee Noel Chase opened the continued hearing for 618/620 Massachusetts Avenue, exterior
alterations (Additions) in the East Village Historic District

The architect Colin Smith explained the proposed addition plans for the structure at 618/620 Mass Ave.
The Commissioners reviewed the proposed plans and suggested to apply for a formal hearing for next
HDC meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:19pm. Motion carried. All in favor.
