Planning for our Joy in Learning
* Ms. Daley began the conversation with the
Celebration
history behind Joy in Learning (JIL)
Feedback from the Council and Ideas
Celebrations
generated
* Three years ago, LPS switched from School
Improvement Plans to School Innovation Plans
* With that came the concept of a "Joy in
Learning" celebration to capture an
opportunity for a variety of stakeholders to
visit schools to watch student learning and
activities
* Harrington's first JIL two-hour JIL celebration
had multiple activities, including science,
technology, phonics, ELA, visiting dogs, "We
All Belong" videos, student ambassadors, etc.
• Julie Scafidi commented that it really felt like
the "reopening" of school after COVID
• Stakeholders received name tags and student
ambassadors led them in groups throughout
the event participating in multiple activities
• Principals met and want to try and make it a
more authentic experience this time around
• Ms. Daley asked the team what would you
want to see?
• Denise mentioned Fundations as a focal point
to see
• Rahnuma agreed that it would be great to see
the progress on activities highlighted earlier
for folks who visited two years ago
• Melissa wondered about learning more about
how staffing is used; that can be challenging,
however, due to student privacy. We primarily
"push in" versus "pull out!
• Julie talked about showcasing a mini -lesson in
writing to capture some work that has already
been completed as well as a launch of a new
unit
• Ms. Daley talked about launching the JIL
celebration this year with an All HAWKS
meeting
• Melissa talked about how it will be great to
see how we are growing after COVID
• Highlighting student experiences will be key
• Discussion around highlighting Harrington as
one of three METCO elementary schools in LPS
• Dr. O'Connor mentioned that we would first
check with Ms. Hamilton to gain her
perspective on this idea before proceeding
• Ms. Daley made a motion to adjoin, approved
8-0.
