HomeMy WebLinkAbout1977-06-09BOARD OF APPEALS June 9,,1977 The Board of Appeals held a regular meeting on Thursday, June 9, 1977; beginning at 7:30 p.m., in the Selectmen's Meeting Room of the Town Office Building. Present: Ruth Morey, Vice Chairman - Acting Chairman Woodruff M. Brodhead Thomas G. Taylor Irving H. Mabee Haskell W. Reed, Associate Public hearings were held on the following petitions, notices of the hear- ings having been mailed and hearings advertised in the Lexington Minute -Man newspaper as required by statute. Varian/Lexington Vacuum Division - special permit, pursuant to Section 13 of the Lexington Zoning By-laws, so that they may build an addition and provide additional parking areas at 121 Hartwell Avenue. Middlesex Hellenic Orthodox Association, Inc., also known as St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church - special permit, pursuant to Sections 30.3 and 12.2 in order to build an addition to the existing non -conforming structure, at 17 Meriam Street, which will be twelve feet and eight inches (12'8") from the property line on Oakland Street instead of the required twenty feet on a secondary street. The addition (7'2" wide x 46'0" long) is to increase the church seat- ing in the nave at the upper level and to increase the Sunday School teaching area at the basement level. William A. Palmer and Richard S. Palmer - variance from the Zoning By-law to allow for the temporary parking of not more than 25 (twenty-five) motor vehicles on the rear of the property at 388 Concord Avenue. This property is owned by Barbara J. and George W. Forten. An area of 40' by 100' would be used for such variance and the remaining property would not be affected. The area in question is more than 400' from Concord Avenue and more than 250' from the nearest prop- erty currently used solely for residential purposes. The area intended for a variance is located adjacent to the Lexington Lodge of Elks parking area and backs up against an embankment rising approximately 23' above grade which is heavily wooded. The vehicles and area could .not be seen from any street or property other than that owned by the Fortens and the Elks Lodge. A screened fence has been erected to obstruct the view from the Elks parking area. The vehicles to be parked in proposed area will not be worked upon nor dismantled for parts or repair. They will be parked until arrangements canr.be made for their removal. This parking will be used in conjunction with Bob's Towing Ser- vice of Lexington. The petitioner has a lease for the aforementioned area from the owners with the understanding that the remaining 5 plus acres of the prop- erty will not be affected by said use. DECISIONS: The Board made the following decisions, all in open meeting. See decisions for details, all in Board of Appeals' files and also filed with the Town Clerk. Varian/Lexington Vacuum Division - granted unanimously, subject to certain conditions. Church — granted unanimously, subject to certain conditions.
