The Board of Appeals held a regular meeting on Thursday, June 9, 1977;
beginning at 7:30 p.m., in the Selectmen's Meeting Room of the Town Office
Building.
Present: Ruth Morey, Vice Chairman - Acting Chairman
Woodruff M. Brodhead
Thomas G. Taylor

Haskell W. Reed, Associate
Public hearings were held on the following petitions, notices of the hear-
ings having been mailed and hearings advertised in the Lexington Minute -Man
newspaper as required by statute.
Varian/Lexington Vacuum Division - special permit, pursuant to Section 13 of
the Lexington Zoning By-laws, so that they may build an addition and provide
additional parking areas at 121 Hartwell Avenue.
Middlesex Hellenic Orthodox Association, Inc., also known as St. Nicholas Greek
Orthodox Church - special permit, pursuant to Sections 30.3 and 12.2 in order
to build an addition to the existing non -conforming structure, at 17 Meriam
Street, which will be twelve feet and eight inches (12'8") from the property
line on Oakland Street instead of the required twenty feet on a secondary
street. The addition (7'2" wide x 46'0" long) is to increase the church seat-
ing in the nave at the upper level and to increase the Sunday School teaching
area at the basement level.
William A. Palmer and Richard S. Palmer - variance from the Zoning By-law to
allow for the temporary parking of not more than 25 (twenty-five) motor vehicles
on the rear of the property at 388 Concord Avenue. This property is owned by
Barbara J. and George W. Forten. An area of 40' by 100' would be used for such
variance and the remaining property would not be affected. The area in question
is more than 400' from Concord Avenue and more than 250' from the nearest prop-
erty currently used solely for residential purposes. The area intended for a
variance is located adjacent to the Lexington Lodge of Elks parking area and
backs up against an embankment rising approximately 23' above grade which is
heavily wooded. The vehicles and area could .not be seen from any street or
property other than that owned by the Fortens and the Elks Lodge. A screened
fence has been erected to obstruct the view from the Elks parking area. The
vehicles to be parked in proposed area will not be worked upon nor dismantled
for parts or repair. They will be parked until arrangements canr.be made for
their removal. This parking will be used in conjunction with Bob's Towing Ser-
vice of Lexington. The petitioner has a lease for the aforementioned area from
the owners with the understanding that the remaining 5 plus acres of the prop-
erty will not be affected by said use.
