A regular meeting of the Lexington Board of Appeals was held on Tuesday,
September 25, 1973 at 7:30 p.m. in the Selectmen's Meeting Room of the Town
Office Building. Present were Chairman Nickerson, regular members, G. Sheldon,
W. Brodhead, G. Wadsworth and Ruth Morey, a Minute -man Publications' reporter
and a large audience of townspeople.
Public hearings were held on the following petitions, notice having been
mailed to the petitioners, to the owners of all property deemed by the Board
to be affected thereby as they appear on the most recent local tax list, to
town boards and officials who will or might be affected by decisions made and
also advertised in the Lexington Minute -man newspaper.
Adriaan E. Schrauwen - variance from the provisions of Section 27 and other
applicable sections of the zoning by-law, so as to allow for a side yard of
ten feet on each side of the proposed dwelling, instead of the required 15 ft.
The address of this lot is 17 Green Lane.
Honeywell, Inc. - special permit under Article III, Section 2 (g) (1) of the
sign by-law of the town of Lexington, and other applicable provisions of the
sign by-law and zoning by-law, to erect and maintain an addition to the appli-
cant's existing sign at,2 Forbes Road. The addition to the existing sign
shall conform with the plan submitted.
' William C. Gottlieb - special permit under Section 25.21 of the zoning by-law
to establish a gourmet cooking school. Classes would be held five days a
week, Monday through Friday, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and possibly 7 to 9
p.m. on the same evenings. Each class attendance would be limited to eight
enrollees. Various items of food would be prepared for the "class". Food
would not be served, nor would it be sold. No exterior signs of any kind are
desired. There is more than adequate parking space in the driveway, so that
street parking would not be required.
W. R. Grace & Company - finding and determination concerning the proposed con-
struction of (1) an office building and (2) an addition to the existing re-
search laboratory building on the property owned by W. R. Grace & Company at
55 Hayden Avenue, Lexington, and requests issuance of a special permit as
specified in Section 25 of the Lexington zoning by-law.
Johnson Brothers Greenhouses, Inc., by its President (Vice) General Manager,
Frederick T. Johnson - special permit under Section 25.31 of the zoning by-law
of the town of Lexington, entitled "Commercial Greenhouses" to erect and main-
tain commercial greenhouses on a parcel of land containing 6.83 acres more or
less situated southeasterly of the existing greenhouses owned by the petitioners,
numbered 31 East Street, substantially in accordance with a plot plan filed with
petition. Said greenhouses to be erected to be "Superlite Plastichouses."
The petitioners own and operate the existing greenhouses situated at the inter-
section of East and Adams Street and the means of entry and exit utilized for
the existing greenhouses as shown on the plan, will serve the proposed green-
houses. The existing boiler room will provide heat for the proposed greenhouses.
Following the hearings the Board made the following decisions, all in
puplic meeting:

Schrauwen - Granted unanimously with the following variances:
The right hand corner of the house, as you face it from Green Lane,
may have a setback of 25 ft., the left hand side of the house a side
yard of 15 ft. and the right hand side of the house a side yard of
12� ft., subject to verification by the Engineer. Construction must
be started within a period of one year. A building permit is necessary
and the variance must be registered at the Registry of Deeds.
Honeywell, Inc. - Granted unanimously. Must be done in accordance with plans
and specifications submitted to the Board of Appeals.
Gottlieb - Granted unanimously, subject to the following conditions:
1. No signs shall be displayed.
2. All parking must be on the owner's driveways. No parking on Concord Ave.
3. Hours of operation shall be Mon. through Fri., 9:30 to 11:30 a.m, and
possibly 7 to 9 in the evening.
4. Each class shall be limited to 8 enrollees.
W. R. Grace & Co. - Granted unanimously, subject to the following conditions:
1. Construction must be started within one year from date.
2. Materials must be similar to those in the present building and construc-
tion shall be accordance with drawings submitted. (see folder)
3. The statements included in the letter of August 16, 1973 from W. R.
Grace and Company, signed by Van T. Boughton, shall be part of this
special permission. (letter is appended to the permit & is in the folder)
Johnson Brothers Greenhouses, Inc. - Granted unanimously, subject to 13
conditions. See permit in folder.
All pertinent material is on file under the name of each petitioner in
the Board of Appeal's office.
The meeting adjourned at 12:30 �.

The Board has been threatened with suits on the Johnson Brothers Green-
houses, Inc. decision. The decision was not posted with the Town Clerk until
October 17, 1973. The decision was discussed again in open meeting after the
regular hearings scheduled for October 2, 1973 and the permit was held until
the write-up was approved by Town Counsel. Approval was obtained and the
permit was posted (filed) with the Town Clerk as stated.
