BOARD CF AFPEALS MEETING
II
January 14, 1938.
A meeting of the Board of Appeals was held in the Select-
men's Room, Town Office Building, at B :00 P. L . Messrs . Glynn,
Kimball and Ferguson were present. The Acting Secretary,
Elinor Loakley was also present . In the absence of LIr.
Maddison, Mr. ulynn acted as Chairman, and Mr. Kimball acted
as Clerk in the absence of Ir. Robbins .
The records of the meeting of October 29th were read
and ax:proved.
At 8: 15 P. M. hearing was declared open on the appli-
cation of Minnie M. Ryder for permissior to maintain a riding
school at 24 Tiaple Street, Lexington.
Mr. Kimball read the notice of the hearing.
There were seven persons present.
r. Philip D. Clark, agent for C . 11. Ryder, stated that
the persons who rent the house at 24 L:aple Street would like
to have a permit to rent horses . He stated that there have
been horses kept in the barn on the premises always, and t_ ese
' boys would like to maintain a riding school there now. He
stated that the horses would be ridden almost entirely on the
premises as there are several roads cut through in back of the
premises, which consists of a=proximately 150 acres . Yr.
Barker, the tenant in the house at 24 L:arle Street, is going
to run the school.
hr. Glynn asked hr. Barker how many horses he intended
to keep, and Mr. Barker stated that he would not keep over
seven or eight at the most. hr. Glynn asked him if there
was ample parking space on the premises so that cars would not
be parked on the street, and he answered in the affirmative.
I;o other persons appeared in favor of granting the
application.
Mr. Geor-,e L . Ham of 30 aple Street stated boat ne was
a little reluctant to appear at the hearing in oppos_tion to
the granting of this permit, but stated that he was the

He stated that he did not have any objection as far as the
riding school itself was concerned, but he was afraid of what
it might lead to. Mr. Ham said he was fearful that if this
permit were granted, it might lead to something such as the
pony riding school which is operated on 7loburn Street. He
felt that this would be very objectionable to the neighborhood
and a detriment to the property in that vicinity. IIe stated
th, t if there could be sore restrict ons put on a permit for
a riding school such as has been applied for, he would have
no objection to it.

Mr. jlark stated that it was not proposed to use this
property for any such purpose as hr . ram woke of.
Er. Glynn informed r. Ilam that by granting this permit
the zone world not be change , and also that a permit of
this kind, if granted, usually was granted for a term of one
year.
Mr. Edward L. Tyler staged that he felt the same way
about t' e matter as Er. HIam did. He stated that the entrance
to 24 Manic Street -as narrow and would be dangerous if
parking were allowed there, but felt that there was plenty
of room in the back of the property for such a purpose.
Mr. J. Henry Duffy stated tnat he owned the property
i.imediately opposite the entrance to 24 Maple street. He
stated that the entrance to the property was a dangerous
snot and he felt that persons coming and going from the
school might add to the danger. He stated that he realized
this farm had always been a stock farm and thought with the
proper restrictions, limiting the relative amount of activity
and confining it to the areas in back, none of the neighbors
would object.
Mr. Kimball asked hr. Larker if he planned to have a
circular track on the premises, and he said that he did not.
Lr. Duffy asked several questions in regard to the
matter as to the number of horses Thr. Barker now had, how
many he intended to keep, etc . He stated that he would not
voice a formal objection to t}e application but hoped that
the joard would place certain limitations on the permit if
it voted to grant one.
The heari-ir* was declared closed at P :40 P . M.
ir . Daniel J. O'Connell appeared hefore the Board in
regarc to his a plication to maintain a gasoline filling
station at the corner of Fletcher Avenue and :'loburn Street
(being a triangular lot) shown as Lot D on plan of file in
the Town Offices .
Hr. Ki_ ball read the notice of the hearing.
Mr. O'Connell stated that this hearing was necessitated
because of the change he had made in this property by
moving the line of Lot D to increase the frontage on °0oburn
Stren,t by 2C feet. He stated that the same restrictions
would apply to Lot B as already recoraed but he di-sired to
_.ave this 20 foot strip released. The matter had already
been voted on at `Town Meeting, but the Board of Appeals
a1 ? roval was required. Mr. :frightington has the necessary
deeds and releases in connection with this property.
Mr. O'Connell retired.
the Board voted to take no action on these applications
at the present time, but to hold a meeting in the near future
when the full Board would be present.
The meeting adjourned at 8:50 P. M.
