A meeting of the Board of Appeals was held at the
Selectmen's Room, Town Office Building, May 5, 1933, at
8:00 P. M. Messrs. Maddison, Glynn, Baldrey, Robbins and
Ferguson were present. The Secretary was also present.
Hearing was declared open upon the application of the
Moody Land Trust for permission to sell food to club members
and guests at property located at the corner of Concord Avenue
and Pleasant Street. The notice of the hearing was read by
the Clerk of the Board.
Mr. Theodore A. Custance on behalf of the Minute -Man Golf
Club called attention to the fact that some years ago Mr.
Kimball, the former owner of the property where the golf blub
is located, was in the pig business and the Board of Selectmen
closed out the business. Mr. Moody is now asking permission
to cater to the patrons of the golf club. He has spent a
large sum of money to improve the property and he has an
assessment of three times as much as when he first took the
property. Mr. Custance felt that he was asking a reasonable
request and hoped that the license would be granted.
Mr. William G. Potter of Walnut Street stated that he ddd
not see how there could be any objection to the serving of
meals at the club in the neighborhood. Mr. Potter is a
resident of that section and his property extends to the
corner of Concord Avenue and Walnut Street.
Mr. Moody was also,present and stated that there was
more money paid out then taken in within the last three years.
His father is the owner and he felt that he deserved a lot
of credit as he is aiming to have a golf course as good as
any in Massachusetts. They would therefore like to have the
privilege of serving food so that would bring in a little
money to help out on the taxes. They would like to have as
much cooperation as possible as they desire to make it a first
class club. The course had only nine holes the first year,
last year they had 14 and now the 18th is practically completed.
He presented score card showing the par of the course at 71.
There was no opposition presented'at the hearing.
Mr. Maddison informed the applicant that the Town Counsel
had advised that the Board of Appeals did not have authority
to grant permission to have a restaurant in a residential
district, but however, the matter would be taken under
advisement.
After the hearing the Board discussed the matter and the
Chairman agreed to see the Town Counsel again and also to
discuss the matter with Mr. Hartman.
