1 . Peter reF�rted on contacts with David Wiiliams on behalf
of Planning .Board, whv er.pressed concerns about relationshig
between this strategic planning process and their "comgrehensive
plan" process, which will also involve public hearings toward the
end of 1993, but also indicated an interest in coordinating and
cooperating with our process.
2. .7ay reported on cantact� with some 6-8 strategic planning
_ pro{essionals who have indicated an interest in advising or
working with us. Nariman Behravesh of D.R. I , was able to �oin
the meeting; at•hers hoped t.o .�oin future meet•ings. In additian,
Linda Roemer CSimmons Colleqe> sent a letter o�ferin� some
t.houghts, a copy o* which is a�.tached .
3. There was extended discussion of the goals of the
strat.egic planning process and of what role the first round of
hearings should play . No clear consensus, beyond what had
already been captured in the early parts of the 6/23
Implementation Plan, emerged . The sense of the meeting was that

receptive of input, should be focussed on core values, and
perhaps should be followed by some kind of survey as a neYt st.e.p
toward ident.ifying community er.pectations and concerns.

first. raund should involve 5-1� hearings, held in September and
Oct.obe.r , wit.h a general inclina't.ion t.oward 5 hearings, perhaps
one in ea�.h precinct..
5 . It Mas ..�qreFd tha�. both =ocilita�ors and recorders for
the he.arings should be clea:-ly ob�ective and, preferably ,
disinterested , and that �his wns particularly vital in the case
of the recorders. In addition, it was r.greed that the.re should
be taoe recordings o2 all the hearings.
6 . It was agre�d t.h�t. subgrot�ps should work on t.he. three
in�mediete tasks thet hev� tu D� a�dr•���e,� an �='•a�sar�a�.iun �ui-•
hearings in the fall , but that, gendinq authorizat•ic�n Srom t�he
Board of Selectmen, the subgroups should not take concrete steps
toward implementation � The subgroups and their members are as

7 . Ner.t meeting of whole group will be at 7 AM on Thursday,
July 22. In the intervening two weeks, the subgroups will start
work in their areas. Jay will look into possibility of a group
of the strategic planning professionals coming to the 7/22
meeting, or one in the next few weeks, to offer their guidance on
how we should be proceeding and where we should be heading. Rick
will pursue t?►e possibility of a similar presentation by someone
with national er.perience in municipal strategic planning, and
�ill also put toqether a bibliography on the topic.
