HomeMy WebLinkAbout1976-11-17-YAC-min.pdf Minutes from the meeting of Wednesday November 17 , - The minutes were taken by Nancy Abelmann acting as Secretary I . Attendance-the following members were present:Mr Shine , Mrs . Anderson, Mrs . Stevens, Mr. Gower, Heather Levi , Jeff Spencer, Peter Miller, Mr. Flynn, and Nancy Abelmann II . Discussion, of CRC report by our CRC subcommittee: The sub-committee came to the conclusion that the report was poOrly written , had little substance, and had in fact served very little purpose. A discussion followed on how the Youth Commission should respond- it was determined that a letter to the Minuteman and the Board of Selectman would be appropriate. During the meeting Jeff Spencer actually ledfted a letter incorporating input from some of the members . Jr, Gower suggested we say that we in fact do not understand why the Bd. of Selectman accepted such a sub-standard report. He also added that we should mention its basic lack of report form; it prevents no background, development . . . . .Jeff read the letter, and the Commission voted that it should be looked at in its entirity at the next meeting and a vote of approval or disapproval should be taken. III .Dicsussion on the Recreation Sub-Committee led by our Rec. sub-committei Mr. Shine and Jeff Spencer were able to attend the meeting of a sub-committee to the Recreation Committee. This sub committee was formed to "determine if Lexington should develop a community center." Although the sub committee was just formed they are seriously approaching their tasks and already have some ideas- incorporating the Lexinfton Theatre Company, and the Adult Education into their community center. They are investigating the possibility of using Muzzey Junior High. They are making two plans, the first assuming that they only have use of Muzzey when the school is out of session, the second is a projection for the future assuming that Muzzey will be closed and they could have the entire school. This center would be for people of all ages including toddlers , teenagers, the middle-aged, and the aged. At the moment they forsee this as an item for the Town Warrant which would request $10,000; t7, 500 for an advisor, and ;12,500 for equipment. Such centers have been established in other towns, including an excit4dg center planned and implemented by one woman in Concord. Mrs. Anderson exxpressed a very important concerns Had the Recreation sub- Committee talked with the Drug Advisory sub-committee????????? ree , Tince eventually Town Meeting members will have to observe and act upon both budget items, and there Ls sone connection :-JetNeen the two . 4 rather trivial, long discuasion followed concerning the best VAJ for the Youth OommiOlion to pass on. t'rs suggestion to the Recreation sub-oomittee ; we considered a telephone call by the chairman, a letter by the chairman, or the presentation of this question by woddof mouth at the next meeting. of this Recreation Su —committee. It was finally decided that Jeff Sencer or Mr. :Thine would pose this qu*stion, Some nembers present Elere disturbel because they felt It apilropriats to Clive our input in a more formai, and written manner. IV .Report from the Y.17,S. sub-conmittee Mrs. Anderson, having heard that there was a sort of Y.E.S. at the High School 'vent ahead and did some research. She talked with Mrs , Fine who is located in the Carser Center at Lexington High School. Mrs rine has a. telephone available all day for people who want to advertise job positions, ie. babysitting, raking, working at Marlos. . . .Mrs. Fine thei puts this information on an index card and displays It i:n the sindo,v of the Career oentelr. students go and check this ,Irindow, and often times will call the employer and take e job, Often. times the student then reports to Mrs. Pine that they got the jab, or th4. organization reports that the position was filled or the job completed , The card is then taken down and filed away. The systan is one way since it does no recruiting for jobs. Hrs. Anderson conmented on the simple but effective srvice Mrs . Pine is offering. Mr. Gower expressed a concern. that perhaps it is not visible crnough and would he much better in a small building a the ceqter. Other members express.ed a concern that in its present form it services noon d who has graluated frorl! High School, noone who does not happen to see this window, and noone wM1 does not have the initiative to seek out a job. Mrs. Andurson and her sub comrAttee will be researching ways we can help, and thus get some Iyu7p1.!,gity . Tn the mean time Mr Gower proposed that we research N cross section. of A.puth And that we involve businessmen in the town. All these points will be restated and suggestions will, be made by Mrs. Anderson'8 sub committee.
