Lexington 2020 Vision Now and in the Year 2020
1 What's New?
At the halfway point to the 2020 time horizon, the 2020 Vision Committee is looking back at what has
been accomplished over the past decade, looking around at what factors have changed that affect the
community's vision and goals, and looking ahead to frame the Committee's work for the years ahead.
2. What Did We Set Out to Do?
The 2020 Vision Committee obtained community input to develop a framework for what residents want
Lexington to be in the year 2020 Ongoing community input has validated the original goals developed in
2001,which continue to provide a framework for thinking about Lexington's future. The Committee has
been working to create a community-based process to be used over and over again to keep the long-range
framework current. The Lexington 2020 Vision process promotes and provides for increased community
participation and hearing a broader range of voices.
3. Why is Long-Range Planning Important?
Complex factors beyond local control often drive the challenges a town like Lexington faces In addition,
there are fewer resources at all levels of government to address the needs. Engaging a broad spectrum of
the community in strategic planning for the future can increase the likelihood of successfully working
together to solve problems. When people come together to define shared interests, identify goals, and
develop tools and strategies, a community works more effectively and can bring about positive change for
the future
4 Where Have We Been? (see timeline on reverse)
5. Where Are We Going?
The Lexington 2020 Vision Committee seeks to engage the elected boards and the wider community in
discussions of how to move the vision and goals forward. The 2020 Vision Committee is discussing next
steps with the Board of Selectmen, the School Committee, and the Planning Board, who created this
process of community visioning and strategic planning. Community groups and organizations, committees
and boards, businesses, and individuals are invited to take ownership and participate in bringing the vision
and goals to fruition.
