HomeMy WebLinkAbout1997-LEX2000-rpt.pdf Lexington Conunission 2000 write-up for Town Report mailbox:/C%7C/WINDOWS/QFNONL/NSCAPE32/PROG. 00?id=34C790C3 1473@ix.netcom.com&number=0 LEXINGTON COMMISSION 2000 The Lexington Commission 2000 was formed by the Board of Selectmen in 1997 with the following mission: To foster an appropriate town-wide celebration for Patiot ' s Day in the year 2000 which will attract interest from townspeople as well as visitors . Through interaction with civic and other organizations within the Town of Lexington, create a celebration befitting with 225th anniversary of the Battle of Lexington. The Commission initially contains eight members appointed by the Board of Selectmen with more added as necessary to successfully complete the Commission' s mission with the approval of the Board of Selectmen. The Commission will be dissolved in June of 2000 and upon acceptance of the final report to the Board of Selectmen. The Commission is planning an appropriate celebration for Patriots Day Weekend April 14 - 17, 2000. It will be the first time since 1775 that the events of the first day of the War of Independence will be reenacted in chronological order Events being planned as as follows . April 14 - 17, 2000 Two Authentic Revolutionary War Encampments April 14, 2000 The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere April 15, 2000 Reenactment of The Battle on the Lexington Green and the retreat from Concord, featuring E battle reenactments and living histories with 9C to 1200 reenactors from Rhode Island, Connecticut,New Jersey, New York, Michigan, Hampshire, Massachusetts and Canada. The Commission is working closely with the Town Celebrations Committee to avoid overlap and planning conflicts and is also working closely with the Police Department, Fire Department and Department of Public Works in matters concerning public safety and traffic control. The Commission held its kick-off Press COnference at the Museum of Our National Heritage on December 15, 1997, which was attended by over 75 local business, civic and town leaders.
