HomeMy WebLinkAbout1977-01-20-TCC-min.pdf TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE January 20, 1977 PRESENT Chmn Barnes, Mrs Litchfield, Mrs. Mitchell, Mr Fitzgerald, Mr Flynn, Mr Brenchick, Mr. Turner Paul Jenkins MINUTES of the meetings of January 6 and January 13, 1977 were approved CORRESPONDENCE A letter from the Nutmeg Volunteer Junior Fife and Drum Corps was received and given to Mr Flynn for attention re participation in the Patriots Day parade A letter from Dan Fenn, Chairmen, Appointment Criteria Committee, which contains the draft of recommendations to be made to the Selectmen by this committee, was read in part to the TCC by Chmn Barnes The TCC paid special attention to the introductory portion and to that portion of the report concerned with TCC appointments There was discussion and unanimous agreement that, regarding the suggestions for potential TCC members, there was no particular reason that a relationship between an appointee from any particular group and the TCC need be considered by the Selectmen The TCC has maintained close contact with representatives of various groups whenever there was a need to do so and there seemed to be no difficulty working with each of these groups whether or not a committee member had identifiable ties with that group The TCC has an overall, by-law responsibility for such cele- brations as the Selectmen may determine and has asked for help from Town employees and Town officers as well as citizen groups whenever needed Chmn Barnes will contact Chmn Fenn with the TCC response to this section of the report, as well as the TCC overall approval of those other portions of the report discussed Mrs. Litchfield reported that she had contacted Mrs Collard of the Lexington Red Cross, and the Committee expected that a Red Cross repre- sentative would be at this meeting to discuss Patriots Day first aid re- quirements, noerepresentative attended the meeting PARADE STAFF, Discussion regarding establishment of requirements for parade staff continued along the lines of that carried on during the January 6 and January 13 meetings It was agreed that the Chief Marshal should, as has been past practice, submit the names of his staff to the TCC, which would approve those appointments before the individuals were asked to serve There was also continued discussion as to whether or not the Chief Marshal should be required to be a Lexington resident It was moved by Mr Turner and seconded by Mrs Litchfield that Chmn Barnes be authorized to ask a non-resident to serve as Chief Marshal for the 1977 Patriots Day Parade. Motion carried, with 4 yeas and 2 nays. It was then moved by Mr Brenchick and seconded by Mr Flynn that the TCC authorize Chairman Barnes to contact, in order, two prospective candidates for Chief Marshal of the 1977 parade Motion carried with 4 yeas, 1 nay, 1 abstention Chmn Barnes will report to the committee on January 27 OTHER ARRANGEMENTS Mr Fitzgerald has reserved the Kennedy School from 12 noon on Mr Flynn and Mrs Mitchell have completed addressing invitations to the non-military bands and marching units Respectfully submitted, Ruth M Mitchell Recording Secretary
