January 6, 1977
PRESENT Mr Brenchick (acting chairman) , Mrs Litchfield, Mrs Mitchell, Mr Flynn,
Mr Fitzgerald, Mr Turner
Paul Jenkins
MINUTES of the meeting of December 9 were approved Although the TCC met at the
Visitor's Center on December 16, there was no business at hand, thus the
meeting was of an informal and brief nature and no minutes were taken
CORRESPONDENCE Mrs Litchfield reported a phone call from Mrs. Scalise of
Lexington Her son owns a battery-powered mini-bike and would like to participate
in a Patriots Day parade The TCC agreed that there were many problems associated
with this type of request and that much further information is needed Mrs Scalise
will be asked to attend a future TCC meeting
There has been no communication regarding a definite arrival date for the
new flagpole
PATRIOTS DAY There was discussion as to qualified individuals who might be asked
to serve as Chief Marshal Those present at the meeting agreed that asking non-
Lexington residents to act as Chief Marshal could pose many problems, general
agreement was that the Chief Marshal should be a resident of the Town No vote was
taken
Suggestions as to possible parade theme were as follows
Celebrate a Proud Land
One Nation Indivisible, One Nation for All
Old Glory Still Flies
Old Glory Flies Again
Long May It Wave
Flag of the Free
Our Flag - Long May It Wave
Old Glory - Long May It Wave
Stars and Stripes Forever
It is to be noted that much of the discussion of possible parade theme for 1977
was made with the assumption that a dedication of the new flagpole might well be
scheduled as part of the weekend celebration
The TCC will handle that correspondence which has been handled by the Chief
Marshal during the two Bicentennial years Mr Flynn will oversee correspondence
with bands and other musical units, Mrs Litchfield will handle general correspondence
and guest invitations, Mr Brenchick will handle all correspondence relating to
float participation In the latter regard, Mr Brenchick noted that Mr Bok had
not fulfilled his obligations within the Town during 1976, the TCC will no longer
recommend that groups contact him
On January 13, the TCC will review the forms to be sent to marching units
(musical and otherwise) as well as a covering letter It is planned to send these
letters and enclosures to groups well before the end of the month Mrs Mitchell
and Mr Flynn will review them in detail and bring suggested changes to the meeting
The celebration in Lexington will be held on April 18, Monday, the legal holiday
Other events were discussed It was moved, seconded and voted that Mr Fitzgerald
should request a reservation for the Kennedy school There will be a post-parade
reception, the TCC would like to hold it there again There was discussion as to
whether or not the luncheon should be held again in the usual manner, Mr Fitzgerald
will ask that the Sheraton forward a copy of their luncheon menu to him so that
price estimates can be made Whether or not a luncheon is held, it was agreed that
reviewing stand guests who are not marching should arrive at the stand at the same time
TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE - Minutes, January 6, 1977 Page 2
Mr Fitzgerald will, therefore, ask that the Kennedy school reservation be held
from approximately 1 pm on, in case there is no luncheon and we ask the guests to
assemble there before going to the stand
It was moved, seconded and voted that the reviewing stand this year should
be located on the Battle Green in the same position as in 1976
Mrs Litchfield will write to the Lexington Minute men to ask [or their
official representative to the TCC for all Patriots Day activities The
committee does, indeed, plan to coordinate the Battle Reenactment as in past
years, the event itself is the responsibility of the Minute men
There was some discussion regarding means by which financial sponsorship
of marching units might be obtained, if this were desirable Mr Fitzgerald
noted that business sponsorship should be approached by means of the Lexington
Chamber of Commerce It was suggested that various service organizations
might be willing to sponsor - some have done so in the past It was agreed
that if the TCC undertakes to seek this help actively, it would be desirable
to contact the service clubs first No firm decisions were reached, however
Mrs Litchfield will contact Mary Ferris at Hanscom AFB for a list of
officers presently holding commands of those groups which are usually repre-
sented or have customarily been invited as guests of the Town on Patriots
Day She will also obtain the addresses of the elected representatives
of the Town so that invitations may be sent at the proper time
Respectfully submitted,
Ruth M Mitchell, Recording Secretary
