RECREATION MEETING
c/ Wednesday October 22, 1980
Members present - D. Wells, Chairman, J. Uhrig, R. Eby, L. Wilson,
P. Spagnolia, reporters from Independent and Minuteman, Staff Halverson.
1. (Rec Committee met with Capital Expense Committee at 7:30 to review
5 year requests..)
; 2. Minutes approved as corrected-Mrs. Pauline Spagnolia's name was
misspelled.
3. Tot lot apparatus-Center - L. Wilson and staff Halverson and Prentiss
met with Preschool PTA and Tom Paine to review design of apparatus for
Center playground. The latest design incorporates an existing tree.
If this site is chosen, the adult swings would need to be relocated.
Final plans will be presented to the Rec Committee. In the meantime,
cost estimates are being gathered.
4. J. Uhrig presented a chart of all the school playfield facilities
visited and the repairs needed at these sites. Many of these improvements
are things that could be improved by the regular Parks Dept. crew while
others are major cost items. Cliff Prentiss will be given the list
to cost out. Then a meeting will be set up between the head of DPW,
M. Coscia, Paul Mazerall, Cliff Prentiss, J. Halverson, and members
of the Rec Committee. It is the intent to prioritze the repairs and
determine who will do what.
5. Budget - Pool - if ready will be open starting on Memorial Day
weekend and be staffed on weekends only through the weekend before
school's out. It will be available for school use on the weekdays.
It will close at 6 pm on weekends during this period. The Res will
remain closed until the weekend before school is out.
Tennis - The Committee is considering recommending that court reservation
be raised to $1.00 and eliminate the tennis ID card. They will also
consider raising the Youth Lesson fee. This will be further reviewed
at the Nov. meeting. Generally, tennis budget will included a weekend
sign-in only, and a reduced season for the tennis booth operation.
Weekend Booth hours will be budgeted and tennis reservation procedure
revised to allow reservations up to one week in advance. This effort
will reduce the cost of tennis sign-in and booth staff and hopefully
increase tennis reservation revenues.
Other Business - D. Wells sent a letter of thanks to Irving Mabee. He
suggested one also be sent to DPW head with copies sent to manager,
selectmen, Manny Coscia, thanking Mr. Coscia for the job he did as
Clerk of Works for the pool.

Wells recommended that the cost of the plaque for Jim Dhimos come
from the Rec budget. Committee agreed, but wanted to know how other
committees handled it.
Prop 22 and Revolving Fund - The Committee will explore the possibility
of rewriting the revolving fund legislation and incorporate the paying
of staff. The Town of Concord has such legislation. With the increase
cost of budgets, it seems inevitable that a system be designed to
utilize money to pay directly for services.
The next Rec meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 19th at 7:30 pm.
Jim Dhimos, retired committee member, will be honored at that time.
Meeting adjourned at 10:15 pm.
