SELECTMEN a
JUN - 6 1980 RECREATION COMMITTEE MEETING
Wed, , May 28, 1980
Present: D. Wells, Chairman; J. Uhrig, R. Eby, L. Wilson, J. Dhimos
Staff: Halverson; Reporter: Hinkle
Minutes of April 17 meeting were accepted as corrected, Mickey
Hinkle was thanked for all the newspaper coverage she has given us, especially
the pool article.
Tennis Bang Board: Letters from Euart and Farr, abutters of the relocated
tennis back board were reviewed. Their concerns were the noise level,
early morning weekend play and the blockage of the neighbors view. The
committee voted to post a sign which would prohibit play prior to 8:30 am
on weekends and holidays. The noise problem was referred to the Permanent
Building Committee for reconsideration and review. Suggestions included
filling the board with foam, or building a cement fence to block the noise.
Wells commented that the trees block the view of the board from May
through October. The restricted tennis hours will also be announced in
the paper.
Pool Dedication: The pool will not be dedicated to anyone at this time.
The Gallagher Plaque will be put upon the wall adjacent to the pool by
the drinking fountain. The date of the Open House has been changed to
Saturday, July 12 at 2:00 pm. Robert Eby will contact John Walker and
Karen Jernza regarding the exhibition. There will be free swimming all
weekend (July 12 & 13).
Pool Rules : The Committee reviewed the attached rules for the pool and
made changes where needed. Norman Cohen, town council, will also review
them. When approved they will be posted at the town pool facility,
Water Bill Insert- The draft of information on the new pool complex was
reviewed. This will be inserted into the June 1980 water bill.
Committee Reorganization: Robert Eby nominated Dave Wells for a second
term.as Chairman of the Recreation Committee. The move was seconded by
Lynn Wilson and voted unanimously by the Board.
Wells briefly thanked everyone for their cooperation and support
this past year. One goal he will pursue this term is to seek further
communication with Hayden and continue to arrange for quarterly meetings
with their Board. A letter will be written to the entire board requesting
such a meeting.
Staff Reports:
a) Hiring - all staff have been hired, but we are receiving a number
of declines for many of the positions.
b) Hartwell Ave. - Committee was informed that a proposal for federal
money was submitted to the state for funding on May 20. It is doubtful
that any funding will be received due to the fact that there is
only $142,000 available to the entire state and the request is
for over $250,000. The proposal will also be submitted to the state
for consideration. The proposal needs to have letters of support

from the Board of Selectmen and Police Chief before this can be sent.
Lexington Bike Path - We are awaiting the memorandum of Agreement
from the State. (As of Thursday, May 29 it was rumored the state
was sending the copy to Lexington on May 29 to be once again signed
by the Board of Selectmen. Thereafter it would take approximately
three weeks to be set up before a bid could be solicited.
c) Informal request was made for block reservations of the tennis courts
RECEIVED for a tennis party. The committee voted down the request and suggested
SELECTMEN the group use the regular method of making reservations.
J U I _ 6 19=1) Sutherland meeting went well. Four neighbors attended and were
concerned about when things would be done. They looked through
equipment catalogs and made suggestions for use of the playground
area. A bid package will be prepared in the near future for the

an early fall seeding and planting contract. The fence and back-
