will turn out The purpose of the meeting is to explain the program
and discuss the future of the shelter in Lexington If there is
community backing, the board may exercise its option to buy the
house Youth Commission members suggested that the officers of
RePlace be rged to attend and also felt that a letter of support
from Dr Clune or Dr Lawson might be helpful Any interruption
in the program would be unfortunate as Safehouse is usually operatigg
at peak capacity (8 youngaters)
D Perez and J Shine reported that the Youth Recognition Com-
mittee had received a number of nominations and would select recipients
at the meeting on April 8th - probably four

Hayden and urged other members to visit and become acquainted with
the current program, A meeting with Hayden will be scheduled in May
so that we can have a mutual exchange of ideas
The chairman suggested that it was time for a change of officers
but members felt that the present informal arrangement should continue
for a while longer An effort to get high school members for next
year will be made this spring
The chairman asked members present to suggest youth problems
or programs which they believe we should be looking at or taking
action on Feakes suggested that we should be looking at the
problem of drinking and driving because a number of deaths of young
people have occurred in Lexington from this cause It is epidemic and
seems fo need some attention What is being done to help this situation?
Corman asked whether much education about alcohol use is done in
the schools In most schools, very little is done Should the courts
and the police be doing more? Should we try to establish a hot-line
manned oy volunteers who would drive young people home Os if they
had been drinking or were with a driver who had been drinking?
Commission decided to draft a letter to the junior and senior
classes who are getting ready for proms and emphasize the importance
of not mixing alcohol and driving
