The Committee met at the Church of Our Redeemer on Meriam St. The meeting was called
to order at 4 07 p.m. A tour of the new center and CoA office was the first item
of business The Town has a letter of agreement with the Church for the new center
There was a brief review of the senior centers visited in Amherst, Winchester, Leo-
minster, and Peabody, as well as review of a data sheet on those communities and
their senior centers The trip scheduled for Thursday, August 10, to Holyoke is
postponed indefinitely
Nancy Banks reported that the Ad Hoc Human Services Council has scheduled a dis-
cussion of senior services for their Sept. 15 meeting at 3-00 p.m. Service pro-
viders for Lexington will be present, and it would be helpful if members of the
Senior Center Committee attended also.
Next was a discussion of the needs assessment work that has to be done Although
the charge to the Committee was to find a site, the Committee first has to deter-
mine what kinds of services would be made available and what facilities they re-
quire Programming draws people to a center Programs and services are based on
need, and this must be demonstrated first. A survey could also show what is be-
ing provided currently, by the CoA, the Recreation Department, the Board of
Health, etc What services do these agencies believe should be expanded?
The over-60 population is increasing at a much faster rate than the total _ -
population The over-60 group is a difficult one to reach, and no thorough
survey has been done so far in Lexington.
If the Committee considers a multipurpose community-type center, then we should
begin talking to other agencies who might use such a facility Senior clubs in
Lexington also should be contacted. Hayden might be considered as a possible site.
A subcommittee on needs assessment will meet on Wednesday, August 16, 1978, at
4 00 p.m. in the Town Office Building
