Followinz; a series of open meetings, members of the Coxcununity Relations Committee met with various individuals and �;,roups in- i cludin� the Superintendent oi Schools , Town Manager, j'ersonnel � Advisory Board, T.he Chamber of Cotnmerce and Th� Concerned Black Citizena of Lexington. In addition, several a�;oncies incluciing the Massachusetts Commission against Discrimination, �Yassachusei;ts League of Cities and Towns and other town governments were con- tacted with respect to affirmative a.ction prograins. At tha tlme of our char�e, the Committee found there was suffic�, i�nt evidenco to indicate that the Town had not done aZl it ooulcl to encourage eaual opportunity in I,ex.ingta�i. The Communit� Re- 1a.tions Committoe, however, recognize� the present effor'ts uf thc; ; Board of' Selectmen in unaminously voting to adopt an affirmative i action policyo Tn keeping wit.h the above, �he Committee wisb.es to support tho I present ciirection of the Boa.rd and in addition, recognizes the � other boards , agencie� and committoes that ax°e endeavoring to address equal opportunity. � Wo comrnend the Lexington Public School Committae for their equal � opportun.it;� action program and the present efforts of the Lexin�- ton school administration in actually pursuing minorit� cand.idates � for all levels of em�loyment. We strongly suaport the ChamY�er of Commaree� s nosition. in advocating equal opportunity employment statements for all a.n hirint; advertisementsn ti1e enthusiastica7.l.y endorse the present effort3 of the Person�l Advisory Board ln theic pursuit of an affirmative action plan for all publlc town agenc3.esm We o£fer the followin� recommendations : �de urge the Lexington Publi.c School Commlttee to undertake an analysis of system wide curriculum in order to ascertain tho degree of ef£ectiveness with which �aomen and mizxoritie� are represented and integrated inta content mateiials at each grade level. In addition we feel there is much confusion on the part of ' many people r3s to the exact nature o£ affirmative action and we hope that both affirraation action, equal opportunity and grievance procedures would be included in the town report �N-a Minutemari Publicatio n in order to assure greater knowledge of these .related subjects.
