SELECTMEN
MEMORANDUM Qi ,AA, .f't
To: Alfred S Busa, Chairman DATE: 1/6/83f i
AGE:
Board of Selectmen /// '`
FROM: Peter M. Chalpin, Chairm4h / SUBJECT' Adam Street
Traffic Safety Committee o/ly , Truck Exclusion
At its meeting of 1/5/83, the Traffic Safety Committee
met with seventeen residents from Adams Street and Hancock
Street to discuss their request for a heavy truck exclusion
Mrs Gloria Bacigalupo, spokesperson for the group, explained
that a significant increase in the number of large trucks
using this route to and from Quinn Perkins has occurred in the
last three months This increase together with apparent speed,
stop sign and weight limit violations , prompted the neighbors
to seek relief from the Town through a heavy trucking ban
Such a ban however cannot be instituted
On December 20, 1982 the Committee contacted Mass DPW
relative to this request and was told that the necessary permit
for a ban would not be issued As with the recent similar case
from East Street, the Town is unable to meet Mass DPW require-
ments with respect to providing a suitable alternate route wholly
within the Town of Lexington
Concerning apparent moving violations, the Committee
assured the group that increased enforcement would begin immediately,
and that the Registry of Motor Vehicles would be asked to assist
in citing overweight trucks The Committee also suggested, since
a legal ban cannot be put in place, that the group again approach
the owner of Quinn Perkins to request further consideration This
was done by Mrs Bacigalupo in December and apparently resulted
in a substantial decrease in truck volume at that time Voluntary
compliance by Quinn Perkins and the other truck operators is the
only way truck traffic on Adams Street and Hancock Street can be
minimized
