Chalpin, Chairman SUBJECT: Bridge Street Traffic Traffic Safety Advisory Committe Page 401 of 2 At its meeting of March 2, 1988, the Traffic Safety Advisory Committee met with Mr Richard Games, and three other Bridge Street residents, to discuss their request for relief from speeding commuter traffic. A number of approaches to the problem were looked at, including those listed on the residents' petition The Engineering Division performed a radar speed study on February 22 and February 24, 1988, and found the 85th percentile speed to be 39 MPH, clearly unacceptable, since the speed limit under the Fundamental Speed Law is 30 MPH It was agreed by all that Bridge Street is being used as a cut-trough, not only during peak hours, but all day, and under these circumstances, it was felt that increasing enforcement to a level which would be an effective deterrent to speeding was impractical It was then agreed that limiting the volume of cut-through traffic might be a viable alternative It is therefore recommended, by a majority of the Committee, that Bridge Street be made one-way, from Payson Street to Spring Street, for a six month trial period At the end of that time, we propose to meet again with Mr Games to assess impacts, positive or negative Under Chapter 689 of 1986, this regulation does not require a permit from Massachusetts D P W March 15, 1988 Bridge Street Traffic Page *2 of 2 The Committee also recommends that Massachusetts D P W again be requested to update and modernize the Marrett Road/Waltham Street intersection and signal system.
