TOWN OF LEXINGTON
TRAFFIC SAFETY ADVISORY COMMITTEE
MEMORANDUM
TO• John C Eddison, Chairman DATE: November 20, 1987
Board of Selectmen
FROM: Peter M Chalpin, Chairma SUBJECT• Hancock St /Adams Street
Traffic Safety Advisory Co,-~ ee
At its meeting of November 18, 1987, the Traffic Safety Advisory Committee met with
Mrs. Joseph Polhill and others to discuss traffic at the Hancock Street Rotary and
on Adams Street
We recommend installing three "Rotary Traffic" signs on the Hancock Street rotary
This should eliminate any confusion as to who has the right-of-way These signs
have been on the rotary in the past
Concerning speeding on Adams Street, we recommend increased enforcement, which has
already begun D P W has been alerted with respect to the manholes, and repairs
will be made if necessary
The issue of truck traffic was also, and again, raised by the group Since the
requirements of the Massachusetts D P W for a Truck Exclusion Permit on Adams
Street have not changed since 1983 when the group first made this request, we told
them that trucks could not be excluded at this time (Enclosed is backup from 1983
which resulted in denial of a Permit by Massachusetts D P W ) The Committee
suggested that the residents approach Quinn Perkins to request a voluntary ban,
which worked well in 1983
